He died in Niederbronn, aged 66. In 1884 he received his doctorate in natural sciences from the University of Strasbourg with a dissertation on the ammonite genus Harpoceras, titled "Beiträge zu einer monographie der Ammonitengattung Harpoceras". In 1897 he became maître de conférences at the Sorbonne in Paris, where in 1904 he was named a full professor of geology. In 1902 he was appointed president of the Société géologique de France, and from 1917 to 1927, was a member of the Académie des sciences. His major work, "Traité de géologie", was published in two volumes (1907–11; Vol. I. "Les phénomènes géologiques", Vol. II. "Les périodes géologiques"), with volume II being issued in three parts. He was also the author of: "Les géosynclinaux et les aires Continentales", (1900). Рассматривая историю развития геосинклиналей и платформ («континентальных площадей»), стремился доказать, что морским трансгрессиям на континентальных площадях во времени соответствуют регрессии в геосинклиналях и наоборот («закон Ога»). Курс геологии Ога способствовал поднятию уровня преподавания этой науки во многих странах, в т.ч в России (7 изданий).
